Description:
Charles H. Ballard of Worcester, MA invented the Ballard rifle and was granted patent number 33631 in November of 1861. The first company to produce the Ballard was Ball & Williams of Worcester, MA, with production running from 1862 to 1865. Merwin & Bray of New York was responsible for handling the distribution and sales of the rifles to the U.S. Government. This model carbine was one of the earlier models produced, this example was produced in 1864, according to its serial number.
Overall, the weapon is in great condition but was browned by its previous owner. Wood is in great condition with only one minor crack on the underside next to the extractor lever. Stamps are visible with “Ballard’s Patent Nov. 5, 1861″ on the left flat and “Merwin & Bray Agts New York” on the right flat of the barrel. The “Ball & Williams” stamp on the top flat has been lost to history. The serial number, “10283” is stamped underneath the Merwin & Bray address line. Caliber is the .38 rimfire long. Rear flip up sight is stamped : 100 yards, 250 yards, 500 yards.. Mechanics are crisp and fully functional. Shipping may be higher than stated as shippers raise their prices twice year without notice! When buying a gun always have it examined by a competent gunsmith before shooting.
