They were ordered with permently attached leather sheaths over the barrel and barrel assembly to protect them from rusting in wet and/or salty environments. Most of these Sharps & Hankins carbines saw extensive service during the American Civil War aboard Union Navy vessels and most of the surviving examples have heavily damaged or missing leather covers. It can be safely assumed that many of the 6,686 produced were lost at sea, making an example in any condition quite scarce. This particular example is serial number 10734 and is in good condition overall. A full description to follow...
