Description:
***   SOLD  ***   NEW PRICE   ***  This really nice G.E. Lewis 16 bore hammergun was recently refurbished in the UK by Toby Barclay of Heritage Guns.  This gun, number 8485, was made in 1890 and represents a fine condition example of the elegant, small bore, sporting hammerguns that were the vogue in the last quarter of the 19th Century. There is a fair amount of original colour hardening still visible on the locks and action and this coupled with the sensitive restoration and excellent barrel dimensions makes it a very pretty and safe gun for either game or clays.   ***   The action is of traditional design and features: some original case hardening colour; double triggers; rounded action bar; back action locks; Stanton patent rebounding 'C Scroll' hammers; sprung strikers; percussion fences; top lever opening, operating a 'Purdey Bolt' by way of Greener style leverwork; Hacket style snap-on forend fastener. Engraving style Border & Scroll with Gundogs on each lockplate. 'CHOKE' engraved on the upper surface of the left barrel. Gun weighs 6lb 7oz. Trigger pulls measure approximately: Front trigger 3 ½ lbs Rear trigger 4 ¼ lb. The Damascus laminate barrels are 29 ¼" in length, chambered for 2 ¾" (70mm) cartridges and are of brazed 'dovetail' lump construction with soft soldered ribs. Top rib is of smooth, concave game type. Birmingham reproof for 70mm nitro powder cartridges in 2015. The right barrel is bored 0.671 with a constriction of 0.008 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.037. The left barrel is bored 0.681 with a constriction of 0.019 for Modified choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.031.   ***   The Straight-hand Grip Stock and Splinter Forend are crafted from well figured walnut and feature a vacant white metal oval. The snap-on forend carries an ebony tip and the stock is finished with ¾" leather covered recoil pad. The stock is lightly cast-off for a right-handed shot. The 20 lines per inch checkering has been refreshed to its original design. The stock is finished with a traditional linseed oil based preparation. This finish uses no grain fillers to achieve its deep, smooth lustre, only many hours of alternate build and flatting off of the surface. Stock dimensions are 14-3/4” by 1-1/2” by 2-1/8”. Slightly cast off for the right hand shot. Great gun for clays or game that you will be proud to uncase.Isn't it time to reward yourself?   ***   Buyer is responsible for all shipping, insurance, and any other related charges. I give a 3-day non-firing inspection period and will only accept returns at buyer’s expense if the gun is not as described in the listing. US Agent for Heritage Guns UK.
