SCARCE Allen & Thurber MUZZLELOADING .40 Cal Rifle
1 of 300 Percussion Muzzle Loading Sidehammers Made!
Here we present an antique Allen & Thurber Side-Hammer Muzzle-Loading Rifle, made circa 1845 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Only a few hundred of these muzzle loaders were manufactured in total in the 1840s to 1860s during the various Ethan Allen partnerships. This example has an adjustable peep sight mounted on the tang of the receiver. There is also evidence that there may have been an early telescopic sight mounted to the top of the barrel at one time as there are 3 threaded mounting holes visible. There is scrollwork engraving on the sides of the action. It has a German silver forend and a distinctly large buttplate. A ramrod is fitted under the barrel. The trigger has a set feature.
The top of the barrel is marked “ALLEN & THURBER. WORCESTER”.
The overall condition is good. The iron parts have a soft gray patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is smooth and solid aside from a couple short, stable cracks where the stock meets the frame. The bore is in very good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. The single set aspect of the trigger would need some tweaking to work correctly, but the action does work as intended without the set feature.
