FINE MIFFLIN COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA PERCUSSION LONG RIFLE BY CHRISTIAN DETWILER CA. 1850’S. 56” overall with 41” octagon .45 caliber rifled barrel. Lock signed in script with the maker’s initials “C D”. Engraved brass patch box and mounts. Silver engraved “NEW MOON” inlay on cheek rest. Tiger maple stock. Original ramrod. Distinctive architecture and engraving leave no doubt that this is one of his Detwiler’s rifles. Very similar Detwiler illustrated on page 75 of Whisker and Yantz’s GUNSMITHS OF BEDFORD, FULTON, HUNTINGDON, & SOMERSET COUNTIES. Scarce maker. All original in very good plus condition.
