Description:
This is a very nice lightly-used factory nickel Smith & Wesson Model 29-3 revolver with a 4" inch barrel.  This .44 Magnum double-action revolver was manufactured in November of 1984, and appears to have been well-cared for since leaving the factory.  The S&W Model 29 series of revolvers is one of the true classics from the firm.  Built on Smith & Wesson's large "N" frame, the Model 29 was first introduced as the .44 Magnum Pre-Model 29 in 1956 until the nomenclature change to the Model 29 in 1958.  The Model 29 was a huge success for S&W, quickly earning a reputation for being extremely well-made, powerful, reliable, and very accurate.  The Model 29 remains in production still to this day, with a great variety of engineering changes and model variations introduced along the way.  This particular example is serial number AEY1674 and is a somewhat scarce factory nickel finish gun with a 4" inch barrel, a 6-shot fluted cylinder, a red ramp front sight, a white-outline adjustable rear sight, a target hammer, a target trigger, and a set of factory Goncalo Alves target-style grips.  The original factory nickel finish is still bright and beautiful, showing only some very minor handling marks and no flaking or eyesores.  The case-colored target hammer and trigger shows some trace colors in the protected areas but have turned a mostly to a gray patina.  The blued micro-click adjustable rear sight is in excellent condition overall, and the original bright orange-red front sight insert is in excellent condition as well.  The bore in this Model 29 is mirror-bright and pristine, showing nice sharp lands and grooves in the rifling and no visible imperfections or erosion.  The six chambers in the cylinder are equally as clean.  The factory Goncalo Alves target grips on this Smith are in good shape overall, free from any cracks, repairs, or major damage, but do show some wear and small handling/storage marks.  The checkered panels on both grips are still pretty crisp, and both original gold-colored Smith & Wesson medallions are intact and in good shape.  The grips are a perfect match to each other in both color and degree of wear, and both grips are tight to the gun with no wiggle.  The action on this Model 29 is smooth, slick, and precise.  It is perfectly "in time" whether you work it in single or double-action, fast or slow.  You really have to feel the action on this revolver to appreciate how good it is, particularly compared to the new-production guns.  The trigger on this revolver is excellent, particularly in single-action operation where it breaks with a very light pull without any grit or slop.  All of the controls on this revolver are in perfect working order including the adjustable rear sight, and we have no doubt that it will function 100% like the day it originally left the factory 36 years ago.  If you have been looking for a vintage Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum revolver for your collection that can serve as both an investment and as a shooter, this factory nickel 1984-production Model 29-3 would be an excellent choice.
