Description:
This is an excellent example of the WW2 fascist Royal Italian Army Carcano Model 1938 Calvalry Carbine.  This Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is chambered in 6.5 Carcano and was made by the FNA Brescia firm in 1940.  It is an all-matching, all-original, and NON-import marked gun.  It is most likely a U.S. veteran's trophy gun, brought back to the States from the Mediterranean Theatre after their service in WW2 ended.  It was obviously used in combat but remains in very good condition overall.  The Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine, otherwise known in Italy as the Cavalry Moschetto Modello 91/38 Cavalleria, was adopted by the fascist Royal Italian Army in 1938 and features the Model 1891 bolt-operated action fit to a 17.75" inch barrel fitted with a folding spike-type bayonet and shortened stock and handguard.  It was built by four Italian firms during WW2 in both 6.5 Carcano and 7.35 Carcano with total production figures near 100,000 manufactured, with the vast majority of production chambered in 6.5 Carcano.  Both calibers were loaded into the gun using the standard 6-round Carcano "clips"(stripper-like clip), which were inserted into the action from the top and automatically dropped free from the bottom of the magazine housing after the last round was fired.  The small and lightweight carbine (6.5 lbs) was intended for cavalry(mechanized) troops, mountain troops, and artillery or machine gun crews that had to carry a lot of equipment in addition to their rifles.  The Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine proved to be a good combat weapon overall, simple, reliable, well-made, and reasonably accurate.  The only weak spot of the carbine was the barrel-mounted folding spike bayonet, which would work but was not robust enough.  This particular example is really a nice piece and is 100% original and untouched.  Made in 1940, it was in Italian Military service for at least 3 to 4 years during World War 2. This carbine shows a lot of original factory gloss-blue finish remaining on the metal, with only light handling marks and light to moderate finish wear showing.  As you can see from the pictures, this Carcano has a great combat-used look to it and most of the finish wear is on the high-edges and magazine housing.  The original bolt in this carbine has turned a consistent gray patina, with only a few traces of the case-colors remaining in some of the protected areas.  The bolt face is in very good condition, free from any bad primer halo or wear.  All of the factory stampings and proofs are crisp and clear on this weapon, and all of the numbered parts are matching.  The bore in this Carcano is excellent, mirror-bright with strong and sharp rifling throughout the barrel.  There is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible of any kind in the bore, certainly one of the best Carcano bores you could hope to see.  The original stock on this Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is in excellent shape overall and is factory numbered to this gun on the left side of the buttstock.  While the stock shows lots of minor dings, dents, and handling marks, it is free from any major cracks, post-war repairs, or major damage.  There is a minor crack just behind the upper tang but it is still tight and does not open or move when pressure is applied to it.  All of these little handling/use marks in the stock speak to it's use in combat during WW2, and certainly add some character to the carbine.  Besides the serial number of the gun stamped on the left side of the butt mentioned earlier, there is also a double circle inspection cartouche from the factory.  It is somewhat faint but still visible.  All of the original stock hardware is intact and in good condition, including the original buttplate with a small trap door for a cleaning rod.  The original short wooden handguard on this Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine is in excellent condition, a perfect match to the stock and it's tight to the gun with no wiggle.  All of the controls on this Carcano are in perfect working order, including the folding spike bayonet and the adjustable rear sight (only on the 6.5 caliber guns from FNA Brescia).  The action on this carbine is slick and smooth, and the bolt locks into battery perfectly.  There is no doubt that this Carcano would function just as well today as the day it left the factory 80 years ago.  If you have been looking for an all-original and un-molested Italian WW2 weapon for your military collection, this FNA Brescia Carcano Model 1938 Cavalry Carbine would be an excellent choice.  It is certainly one of the coolest weapons that the fascist Italian forces fielded during the war, and this all-original and non import-marked 1940-production gun should be an excellent long-term investment.
