Description:
DESCRIPTION:  Enfield Model 1860 Percussion rifle, approximately 58 caliber, with 20" round barrel, correct blade front sight and correct musket-style ladder rear sight, nicely checkered walnut stock, brass butt plate, fore end cap and trigger guard, blued barrel, steel ram rod, and fully proofed on the barrel, lock plate and rear sight. Left side of butt stock has a 1 1/2" silver plate engraved with the logo of the Honourable Artillery Company and the name "Lewis T Crook" inscribed as well. Lewis T Crook entered the Honourable Artillery Company as a Captain in the late 1870s and was promoted to Major at some point, staying with the unit into the late 1880s. Further research has found that Major Crook was a Freemason and helped charter the lodge in Seaford, England. Available provenance will be included with the rifle.
CONDITION:  Barrel has turned a dark patina and has surface pinprick pitting throughout but all markings and proof marks remain clear. Brass pieces are uncleaned and have turned a nice mustard color. Bore is good with decent rifling and the expected black powder fouling. Action is strong. Nipple shows rust. Stocks in very nice condition. Engraving on plate is worn but still legible, including the "Arma Pacis Fulcra" Latin motto ("Armed Strength for Peace"). Grades NRA Antique Very Good and a neat old percussion rifle with provenance and military history to add to your collection!
TERMS: No international sales. Antique so it can ship directly to you assuming your local laws allow it. Payment by bank check, money order, personal check, or all major credit cards with 3% convenience fee. 3 day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping. Offers considered. Thanks for looking. Interested in buying single pieces and collections of old firearms, especially Winchester, Colt, S&W, Marlin, Savage and Remington. 315.251.4799 with questions or concerns.
