DESCRIPTION: Civil War Richardson & Overman Gallagher's Patent single shot carbine, caliber 56-52 Spencer Rimfire, with standard walnut stocks, open sights and 23" round barrel, fully rifled and has the extractor for the rimfire cartridge with the "nipple" actually being a 1 piece plunger/firing pin assembly, so that when the hammer falls, the plunger strikes downward thru the frame and the firing pin end strikes the rim of the cartridge, serial # 20111. All parts are correct, right down to the sights, sling ring and bar. Many of these Gallagher carbines were used by the 4th Tennessee Mounted Rifles regiment. See Flayderman's Guide 9B-053.
CONDITION: Metal has turned a plum brown with some surface scratches but no pitting or oxidation damage to the barrel or lock plate but the butt plate and hammer show some pitting damage. Bore is bright and shiny with sharp rifling. Stocks have never been cleaned or sanded and never refinished; exhibit typical nicks and dings from use. Patch box cover has the number 175 on the inside, and the stock shows a letter "H" in the wood in the box. Action locks up tightly and functions as it should, including the shell extractor. Grades NRA Antique Very Good and an honest Gallagher Civil War carbine to add to your collection.
