Description:
This is a very rare and collectible Civil War Era Moore's Patent Firearms Co. No.1 Derringer, 2 1/2 inch barrel. It comes with a nice vintage leather presentation case with a felt lining. Engraved silver and brass frame, bright barrel with nice lands and grooves. Action release button on right side of frame, curved trigger sheath. This example has the scroll, arrow and floral engraving. Early serial number 1094 stamped on the bottom of the barrel. The Derringer was checked by a gunsmith and is fully functional, The action works on both half and full cock and has a nice bore.
Approximately 3,000 Moore No. 1 Derringers were produced circa 1861-1865 before the company was acquired by National Arms and subsequently by Colt in 1870. The Moore No. 1 was the first large bore metallic .41 rim fire cartridge Derringer produced in America. This pistol created a new category of self-defense handguns that would find favor with those looking for a large caliber pistol in a diminutive and discrete package, which would remain quite popular for several decades. The Moore was the only Derringer that was around the entire Civil War. Many were carried as a second weapon and some were engraved for the man that carried it It is reasonably priced to sell all offers considered.
