These massive Bowie Style Blade knives were originally intended for U.S. Army Air Corp Bail-Out Kits. They quickly gained approval from fighting men on the ground, including USMC Divisions stationed in the Pacific Island Hopping Campaigns from 1942-1945, including Carlson's 2nd Marine Corp Raider Battalion that used the early Collins Cutlery Horn Handle V-44's. They later switched to the black molded handles as did Case Cutlery, Kinfolks Cutlery, and Western Cutlery. This superb example remains in Excellent++ condition. The factory only sharpened blade measures 9 5/16", it retains well over 80% of the original factory polish. There is age staining (NOT corrosion) along the razor sharp edge. If not for this staining the knife would be in near mint condition. The brass crossguard has it's original finish, and has not been buffed or polished. The black molded handle is mint with no chips, cracks, or dents! The correct original scabbard is near mint! No tears or damage. Most of these scabbards succumbed to "Jungle Rot" as they were exposed to the wet climate of the Pacific Islands. The humidity and damp climate was very harsh on anything canvas or leather. Especially the V-44 scabbard as they were rather thin. Overall, an undamaged original condition Case V-44 Fighting Knife. Mint examples now command $700-$800. Please see pictures on pages 136-137 from Cole's Book 3. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SOLD |
