Description:
This is a very nice example of the Springfield Model 1898 Krag rifle in .30-40 Krag caliber.  These Krag Jorgensen rifles are historically very important as they were the first magazine-fed bolt-action repeating rifle that the U.S. Military accepted into service, in addition to being the first rifle designed for smokeless powder to be adopted into U.S. service.  This particular example is a Springfield Model 1898 Krag rifle, an improved design based off of the Springfield 1896 Krag rifle, which itself was an improved version of the original Model 1892 Krag first adopted into U.S. Military service in Septeber of 1892.  The Krag rifle served the U.S. Military very well, seeing combat in the Boxer Rebellion, the Spanish-American War, and the Philippine-American War.  The Krag was also used to a small degree in fighting the Apache Indians in the New Mexico Territory as well as being deployed with the U.S. Army's railway engineers during WW1 (10th-19th Engineers).  While it performed very admirably in the previously mentioned campaigns, the U.S. troops noted a distinct disadvantage when fighting the Spanish Military armed with the charger-loaded Model 1893 Spanish Mauser rifle.  The ability to use chargers or stripper-clips to load their rifles very quickly was not possible with the Krag, thus giving the Spanish a superiority in volume of fire.  These lessons learned in combat would ultimately be used in the development of the Krag rifle's replacement, the Springfield 1903.  This particular Model 1898 Krag is serial number 202833, making it's date of manufacture 1899.  It remains in all-original condition although it has gone thru a U.S. Arsenal overhaul at some point during it's service life post-1901.  After being in service for a number of years it was sent back to one of the U.S. Military's arsenals to be cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt if needed.  The only part that we can tell was changed for sure was the rear sight, which was upgraded to the later 1901 sight model.  It is possible that some other small parts were changed at that time but everything has such a consistent patina to it that nothing sticks out as newer.  The stock was likely sanded and re-oiled at that point as well, and with the work completed the rifle was inspected and approved for U.S. Military service again.  This is identified by the boxed "CCV" intials on the left side of the stock above the trigger.  "CCV" are the U.S. Military Inspector's intials for Charles Valentine, who inspected Krags and Springfields until 1909.  The original factory blue finish and case-colors on this Krag have aged to a brown-blue on most of the metal, with only traces of bright blue finish and case-colors remaining in the protected areas. As you can see from the pictures, this Krag has a great look to it overall with a very consistent patina from one end to the other.  It looks like it spent time in the field and in combat but not abused.  All of the factory stampings on this Model 1898 are crisp and clear, and all of the screw heads are in great shape.  The bore in this Krag rifle is excellent, very bright and clean throughout with sharp lands and grooves in the rifling.  There is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections of any kind.  The stock on this Springfield Krag is very attractive and in great shape overall, free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major damage.  The American Walnut shows a lot of small handling/use marks but no eyesores.  The original factory applied circle "P" on the bottom of the wrist is still legible, and there are traces of the original boxed cartouche visible to the left of the rework "CCV" stamp.  All of the original stock hardware is in good shape and 100% intact, including the original buttplate, barrel bands, and sling swivels.  The action on this Krag is slick and precise, and the bolt turns into battery perfectly.  All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, including the adjustable rear sight.  There is no doubt that this Krag would function 100% like the day it left the factory over 120 years ago.  If you have been looking for a Krag rifle for your U.S. Military weapons collection here is a chance to nice original example that looks like it saw some combat but is still very handsome. This rifle should prove to be an excellent shooter in addition to being a great investment.
