Description:
The Model 1878 "Frontier" double action revolver was produced from 1878 to 1905 with a total production of 51,000. It is one of the largest frame revolvers made by Colt and commonly chambered for 32-20, 38-40, .41 Colt, 44-40 and .45 Colt. Barrel lengths ranged from 3" to 7-1/2". Most of the model had hard rubber grips with an oval rampant Colt embossed motif with the earliest versions being made of checkered walnut. Blued finish came standard with some special orders in nickel plating. This example was manufactured in 1888 in .45 Colt with a blue finish and the early walnut grips. It has been refinished at some point in its lifetime. During refinishing the "Colt's PT.F.A.MFG Co. Hartford Ct. U.S.A." was removed from on top of the barrel. It retains about 80% of the rebluing remaining with wear on all the edges and high spots. As well as wear on the muzzle and ejection rod. All the bare metal has a nice aged patina. Mechanically the action functions excellent with some minor looseness in the cylinder lock up. The bore has sharp visible rifling with some frosting at the end of the barrel. The walnut grips have been sanded smooth and have a nice grain to them. This is a nice example of a fairly rare, early large caliber Colt double action revolver and would make an excellent piece for a collection.
