W. KETLAND & Co. Brass Barreled FLINTLOCK Pistol
Turn of the Century Self Defense Flintlock!
Here we present an antique W. Ketland & Co. marked Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 1700s to early 1800s in turn of the century England. Ketland & Co. operated in Birmingham, England, from the late 1700s and to the early 1800s to become one of the most prominent and active British makers of the day. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate is marked "W. Ketland/& Co" ahead of the hammer. The left rear side of the barrel is stamped with two Birmingham proofs.
This attractive pistol was made for self-defense inside point-and-shoot distances. The barrel is made entirely of brass. The barrel, frame and trigger guard are lightly engraved.
The overall condition is fair. The iron parts have a dark patina. The markings are clear. The stock is in good shape. There is a crack at the rear screw on the left stock flat that is stable and typical for the type. The bore is smooth. The action is not functional.
