Three Merkel Brothers Started Merkel Firearms In Suhl, Germany In 1898 And Decided To Produce The Finest Firearms In The World. They Succeeded.
The 201-E I’m Selling Was Manufactured In 1982, Suhl, Socialist’s Workers Union (GDR), East Germany (Confirmed By Merkel) And Purchased In 1987 For Use In The Field, Not As A Wall Hanger. Although There Are Many Configurations Of The 201-E Offered For Sale, This Top-Of-The-Line 201-E Was Never Offered For Sale In The US.
The Most Comparative Shotgun Model To The 201-E O/U In Markel’s Lineup Today, Offered Through Steyer Arms, Is The 2001 EL O/U That Retails For Almost $14,000. Many Cost Saving Measures Were Used To Produce The 2001 EL O/U: The Pachmayr Recoil Pad Was Replaced With a Synthetic Black Plastic Butt Plate; The Semi-Pistol Grip Was Removed; No Engraved, Ventilated Barrel Rib; No Engraved Barrel Selector; No Interchangeable Chokes; And The Hand-Crafted Deep Shaded English Relief Arabesques Hunting Scenes Offered On My 201-E Are Missing, Available Only As An Extra Cost Option.

Used For Aesthetics, Corrosion Resistance, Reduced Heat Transfer To The Hands In Hot Climates And Reduced Glint In The Sun That Alerts Animals To The Hunter’s Presence. (I Learned Firsthand About Corrosion During A Rainy Season Hunt With Blued Guns. And The Pain Of Grabbing A Blued Steel Barrel In 115-Degree Heat!). I Believe The Nickeled Barrels Perfectly Match The Original Coin-Finished Box Engravings.
