Description:
Serial #698, .303 British, 25" barrel with a very good bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves. This 1922 dated, “ENFIELD" marked rifle retains 80-85% of an arsenal reapplied, dull blue finish with some silvering and fading along the exposed edges, projections, and contact points. The non-matching bolt has a mostly gray patina with silvering along the handle, bearing surfaces, and some mild spots of freckling on the brightly finished body. A small import stamp is present on the right side of the receiver. The original flip-up aperture rear sight is complete, but the distinctive Mk. V safety is not; instead, the rifle has a Long Branch No. 4 safety with unusual oblong cover plate. The forend, handguards, and buttstock have been arsenal refinished to good-very good condition with nice added military oil finish over numerous handling marks and blemishes. The stamps and markings on the left side are still clear and legible: “E B A / 6686"; while the stock disk has clear RAF and Air Ministry stamps: “ADME / RAF / 203" (Air Defence Ministry / Royal Air Force). A single magazine is included, as well as a green canvas military sling. Also included is a 1907 Pattern bayonet by Wilkinson that has a 1915 date, and RAF issue stamps on the obverse pommel. The blade and hilt furniture are in good shape with dark brown mottling throughout. The original scabbard has a matching patina on the metal, and numerous scuffs on the black leather. The SMLE Mk. V is a fascinating model, a link between the No. 1 and No. 4 series rifles, with about 20,000 manufactured between 1922 and 1924. This example has desirable RAF markings, and is in very good condition overall. FFL or C&R
