Mechanically, it does not have all the “clicks” on the hammer; only the safety and the full cock positions, so if shooting is a priority, then to be fully safe, it should at least have a hammer job and blessing by a competent gunsmith who knows antique guns. It has matching numbers in the 104XXX serial range, which makes it manufactured in 1884 which is about the time that the so-called Buntline Colts entered the market. Now, suffice to say that if this gun was a certainty of being an ORIGINAL 16” Buntline, it would be at least six to eight times the price that I have it listed. I have not tried lettering it, but I am pretty sure that it will NOT letter from Colt with this 16” barrel. More likely it has been re-barrelled using what I think is a Colt Lightning Carbine barrel, thus having the Colt address. The desireable Eagle grips fit very well, so are probably the original grips to this gun and they show just some light wear and have no mentionable damage. The metal is smooth with good traces of original blue in the protected areas, such as the cylinder flutes and top of the backstrap, etc and markings are very good, as well, including the 44CF stamp on the trigger guard leg. Overall, it is a very, VERY impressive handgun, and obviously was built by a very clever and experienced gunsmith and will most likely be picked up and examined by danged near everybody who sees it. It’s a GREAT conversation piece, a great gun show table attraction piece, and after a good hammer notch repair job and gunsmith blessing, it should make someone a great shooter. VG-VG+ as described. $3750 SOLD Antique: Yes |
