Description:
In 1898 Austrian inventor Georg Johann Luger created the Parabellum-Pistole, commonly known as the "Luger", at Ludwig Loewe & Company; which became Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM). Initionally pistols were chambered in 7.65x21 mm Parabellum (.30 Luger). Switzerland was the first to adopt the new toggle-linked Luger and initially ordered 3,000 guns in May of 1900. Following this success and eager for commercial sales, DWM began exporting “GERMANY”-stamped Lugers to the United States with a roll-stamped image of the Great Seal of the United States. Approximately 12,000 Model 1900 American Eagle Lugers in .30 Luger were produced between 1900 and 1902. This immediately caused development of a telescoping shoulder stock holster to fit it. The Ideal holster was designed by Ross Phillips and build by the Ideal Holster Company. These incredibly rare pieces are usually found in excellent condition as they were seen as novelty pieces in the US market and over-shadowed by US semi-automatic pistol designs. This example is in excellent condition with the DWM commercial bluing and excellent straw color on the secondary parts. It has smooth walnut grips and one wood bottom magazine with a faint "GERMANY" stamping on the bottom. The pistol is in perfect mechanical condition with strong rifling and only a light frosting in the grooves. The holster is made by Ideal Company and appears to be the original real deal. The leather is still supple and the locking mechanism works smoothly. There is some light rusting around some of the joint locations, but overall in excellent condition. The pistol seems to have had a spot reblue at the top right of the US Seal Emblem where it appears to have been subjected to some rust (please see attached photograph). The right side walnut grip shows two heavy impact notches and some minor scratches. The pistol is all matching with barrel, frame, lock, trigger plate and toggle all having the same numbers. This is an excellent example of a famous historical pistol and would make an excellent center piece in a collection.
