Pump Action Rifle Made in 1903
Here we present a Colt Lightning Small Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1903, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever action was able to achieve.
This specimen is chambered in .22 rimfire, a very light and handy cartridge for hunting small game or just going out to do some plinking. The front sight features a flip up design, with the primary sight a front post, and the secondary a fine bead inside an aperture.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong all around. The bore is bright. A fun little rifle from Colt!
