Description:
On Hold, Sale Pending.  Here is a wonderful Cased Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver in Museum Grade Condition with a Desirable 1860-61 Pre-Civil War "HARTFORD" Address.  It has a 5" Octagonal Barrel  which is less common than the 4" and 6" lengths.  The original red-velvetine lined case that unlike most, hasn't faded to that yellowish-brown like so many have.  It is in Excellent shape with a solid lid that isn't warped, and comes with the original key.  The accessories are all in near mint condition with the bullet mold retaining all its original blue, the nipple wrench still showing its bright nitre blue, and the Varnished flask with the desirable "COLT'S PATENT" embossed above the scene.  The gun itself appears to be unfired with nearly all of its original case color remaining on the frame, hammer, and loading lever.  The barrel and cylinder have strong bright blue with the exception of some blue that has flaked from the left side of the barrel.  The scene is perfect and I don't see any evidence this was ever fired or that it was carried in a holster. The trigger guard and backstrap are nearly 100% original silver plating.  Screws have all their original fire blue and the varnished American walnut grips have 98% strong original varnish with just a little bit of loss at the edge of the butt.  Numbers are all matching.   Samuel Colt always put his New York City Store Address on his American-Made Revolvers, but the time after the 1859 John Brown Raid at Harpers Ferry up to the Month of April, 1861, Colt was received large orders of his revolvers from the Southern States.  As New York City had a reputation for being strong on Anti-Slavery, he changed the address to his factory address in Hartford to appease his Southern customers during this 1-2 year window.  As soon as the War started, the address was changed back to New York.  The Hartfords tend to be desirable as they could have shipped South prior to the war.  From there, the 1849 Pocket was the most popular personal sidearm during the Civil War with thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers purchasing them.  If you're looking for a nice example that's untouched, this one is fine enough for display in a museum.
