These few guns have incredible history associated with them. This is one of only 1,800 carbines purchased by the federal government near the end of the Great War. The serial number falls within the correct range for this small group of known US Ordnance marked rifles. On top of the receiver has been marked a flaming bomb and “US”. The stock is of gumwood, something that Winchester used on their carbines during this period, and it is certainly distinctive. These were issued to the US Army Signal Corps Spruce Production Division in the Aviation Section, which was a unit stationed in the Pacific Northwest specifically to harvest Sitka spruce timber and make lumber in order to build lightweight aircraft frames for the war effort. It was established in 1917, during World War I, and was based and Vancouver Barracks in Washington state. This was a time when labor strikes were rampant throughout many industries and Unions were really coming into their own. The men who actually did the job were part of the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen. A fitting weapon for soldiers in this time and place. The overall condition is very good. The action is crisp and strong. The bore is reflective with nice rifling. There is a lot of original finish. The stock remains in good, solid condition. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
