Missouri Longrifle made by L. Peabody and signed on the silver ID plate on the top of the barrel and on the lockplate. Poren Peabody was listed in the 1860 edition of the Missouri State Gazetteer and Business Directory as a gunsmith in DeKalb, a post village of Buchanan County, Bloomington Township, population 400. This fine longrifle is 54 1/2 inches overall with a 38 inch octagonal barrel with a silver ID plate engraved with " L. Peabody". The barrel also has 2 gold and 1 silver beads inlayed into the barrel at the rear. There is a silver oval inlaid into the check rest. The rifle has an angled, pewter nosecap and silver inlays at the barrel wedge. The brass lockbolt sideplate has an ebony inlay. The fittings are brass as well as the toe plate and buttplate. The front sight is a silver blade inlaid into the barrel without the use of a dovetailed base. This rifle in chambered in .44 caliber.
