Description:
Guns by Sally-always the best for less. We are extremely proud to offer this stunning version of Winchester's big game lever action, the model 1886. This one is a scarce example of a special ordered deluxe takedown extra lightweight, chambered in the potent .45-70 Government. It was the beginning of efforts to reduce weight for long hunts on mountain or plain. She is fitted with a 22 inch barrel and 2/3 magazine, the only Winchester rifle made routinely with a carbine length barrel. The 1886 was the first of John Browning's designs to be adopted by Winchester. The receiver was milled from a 40 ounce chunk of solid steel, and two vertically sliding bars locked the bolt in place against high pressure loads. Made in the year of our Lord 1908, it is in great shape for being 112 years old. She was ordered to be fitted with gorgeous XX highly figured walnut with checkering and a capped pistol grip. The side of the tang bears assembly number 806 XX, and 806 is stamped in the stock's upper tang cutout. The extra lightweight was typically topped off with a Winchester logo shotgun butt plate. The sights are also very special, including the very unique front sight with ivory bead and the #21 "climbin' Lyman" rear sight. This is the only receiver sight accepted by Winchester collectors. It is very functional, with a quick flick of the thumb, multiple ranges can be dialed in quickly. The small aperture, complete with matting, folds down to reveal a large aperture for close or running shots. This rifle is in very good condition. The blue is strong on the barrel and the receiver, the lever and hammer still bear generous amounts of case color, and there are flashes of nitre blue on the loading gate. The wood is in very good shape, with very distinct checkering, and only minor handling marks and superficial cracking of the piano finish. The bore is great, and the crisp action works as designed, including the half cock safety. She takes down in about 10 seconds, and locks up tight just as fast. These deluxe 1886 guns always bring top dollar, often fetching 12 to 15 thousand at the big gun sales. I see Merz Antiques has a solid frame 40-82 for 11,750 and a solid frame straight stock 40-65 for 10,500, and Heritage Guild has a solid frame 45-70 for 16,500. JE Cauthen has one at 25 grand and another at 31,500. Investors, take note. I triple dog dare you to compare this gun to lot #50 in the Rock Island sale to be held on the 5th of June. It is a virtual twin of my offering, and MINIMUM start is 14 thousand. It sold for 18,000 with buyer's premium. I have done my best to make this one affordable. If you have been looking for the right 1886 for investment or to collect, but want the added clout of a special order deluxe takedown extra lightweight, then look no further.
