Description:
Serial #11410 (Wilkinson Reg. #8921), .476, 6" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves. This is a splendid looking revolver that retains 92-95% of the original bright commercial blue finish with some mild brown flaking in spots, mostly on the sides of the frame at the grip juncture. The barrel rib is marked “WILKINSON MODEL 1892. PALL MALL, LONDON" along the rib, and engraved with the owner’s name along the underside: “W.E. LONG. 4th HUSSARS". The checkered, walnut grips are in excellent condition with some mild wear and flattening of the points on either side. The barrel lock-up is tight and the mechanism is fully functional. Wilkinson records show that this revolver was sold on July 29, 1895 to “W.E. Long, 4th Hussars". William Edward Long was born in 1873, the son of Col. William Long, CMG (High Sheriff of Somerset), and entered Eton as a student in 1890. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on December 12, 1894, was gazetted to the 4th (Queen’s Own) Hussars, and was posted to Aldershot. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1896, and posted to India where he served with the 4th Hussars in Bangalore. He then returned to Britain and resigned his commission in April of 1899. He entered service in the Militia, and served in South Africa during the Boer War as a Captain in 4th Bn. Prince Albert’s Somerset Light Infantry, and took part in operations on the Orange River, and Cape Colony. Following his service in Africa, he entered Colonial Service and became a Company Commander with the Malay States Guides in 1903, and was placed on the Reserve Officer List with the rank of Captain in 1909. He was recalled to service during the First World War, and served with the Remount Services in France, then Egypt, and Palestine. He was promoted to Major in February of 1919, and appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1919 Birthday Honours List. He retired as a (Temporary) Lt. Colonel in November of 1921, but was still shown on the 1929 Army List as being employed by the Remount Services. This is a truly handsome, well-cared for example of a seldom seen Wilkinson Revolver, identified to a long-serving British officer, and rates excellent condition overall. Antique
