Blake US Model 1816 Musket Belonging to the State of Ohio, manufactured circa 1827 in New Haven, Connecticut. Philos & Eli Whitney Blake were the nephews of Eli Whitney Sr. and were believed to be the trustees of the Whitney Armory from 1823 until Eli Whitney Jr. coming of age in 1842. This was made for distribution to the state militias in existence at the time and was originally a flintlock. With advances in technology, many of these muskets were updated to the percussion firing system, which was more reliable. This musket shows that this conversion entailed the removal of the flash pan and frizzen from the outside of the lock, the holes filled and ground flush, a small mound-type bolster was added to the barrel and a nipple threaded in. The hammer was replaced. This process was done with many of these muskets in the years leading up to the American Civil War, but a great many were also done because of the war, when both belligerents were desperate for arms for their troops. Though this musket would have been about 34 years old at the time, it was still a great musket and much higher quality than many of the imports that would be purchased in Europe and issued stateside. This one still bears “OHIO” markings on the stock. The inspector’s initials of James Carrington are visible on the barrel and the stock. This musket survived decades of service in unbelievable condition. The overall condition is very good. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is excellent. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 42 inches. Caliber: .69 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
