Description:

CASED Pair of Antique Remington ARMY-NAVY Revolver

Remington New Model Army & 1861 Navy

Here we present an antique Pair of Remington Revolvers, a New Model Army & 1861 Navy, both made in Ilion, New York circa 1863-1888 and 1863-1873, respectively. These were both made during the time surrounding the American Civil War and would have been purchased privately for use at home or on the front line. The Remington New Model Army represents the second-most number of issued handguns found on Civil War battlefields, second only to the Colt 1860 Army. The Union government acquired a total of some 122,000 of these New Model revolvers for military use, with nearly 110,000 New Models purchased by the U.S. government during the Civil War, at a cost of around $11 each. The State of New Jersey also purchased several thousand for Civil War issue. The New Model 1863 Army represents Remington’s highest production martial pistol. The Remington 1861 Navy is similar to the well-liked Model 1861 Army revolvers. All Remington revolvers were a very popular gun for both sides during the American Civil War. Production of the Navy, though, was limited with just 7000 being produced out of the Remington Armories compared to 147,000 Army models being made. Production began and ended for the Navy in 1862 and nearly all of these were produced solely to fulfill US Government contracts. This is a great opportunity to begin a collection with two distinct Remington models which were prized during the conflict.
These are set in an old fitted case with a full complement of accoutrements to include a powder flask, bullet mold of each size, lead balls, a tin of primers and a priming tool.
The overall condition of Navy is good and the Army near fine. The Army’s metal surfaces bear a lot of original blue finish. The Navy’s surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are clear and legible on the Army and the Navy’s are somewhat legible. The grips on both revolvers are in good shape with visible cartouches. The bores are both very good with strong rifling. The actions on both revolvers are strong. A very neat set!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 8 inches for the Army, 7-3/8 inches for the Navy.
Caliber: .44 Percussion & .36 Percussion
Overall condition as seen in photos.
