Description:
CIVIL WAR OFFICER Presentation MARLIN XXX Standard 1872 REVOLVER Antique

Inscribed “PRES. TO ASA BLUNT 1877”!

Here we present an antique Engraved Marlin XXX Standard 1872 Pocket Revolver with an Inscription “PRES. TO ASA BLUNT 1877”, made circa 1876 in New Haven, Connecticut.

Vermont born Asa Peabody Blunt was appointed adjutant of the 3rd Vermont Infantry on June 6, 1861 and was mustered into federal service on July 16. On September 25, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel, 6th Vermont Infantry, and would later be recognized for his meritorious service at both the Siege of Yorktown (Battle at Lee’s Mills) as well as Savage’s Station. Blunt would then take command of the 12th Vermont Infantry on September 19, 1862. On October 27, the 2nd Vermont Brigade was formed from the 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th, Vermont Infantry regiments, and Blunt assumed command of the brigade as the ranking colonel. He would continue his military career as quartermaster at various posts from 1864 through about 1877, when he was made commandant of Fort Leavenworth. This may hold the significance of the 1877 date in the inscription as this was when he left his previous post for his next. He would remain at Fort Leavenworth through 1888. Just prior to his death in October 1889 he was given his final promotion to major.
