Description:
The Type 2 New Model Rolling Block rifle was introduced by Remington in 1867, and became the basis for all foreign-made Rolling Block military rifles of the period. This rifle is a "Type 2" made by Remington after 1870 as it has the flat-base breechblock which was a new design at the time. Foreign-made Rolling Blocks all retained the earlier concave-base breechblock. Spain purchased 32,000 of these American-made rifles for their army in Cuba in 1871, chambered for the 43 Spanish cartridge otherwise known as the 11x57mmR cartridge. These 43 Spanish rifles became so popular that they were purchased by almost every country in Latin America and were sold commerically by Remington until 1896. This particular example has been well-used but is still in good overall condition and mechanically excellent. The bore is in good condition overall with lots of strong rifling left throughout the 35" inch barrel. The original Walnut stock set is sound and has no major damage, and the early U.S. military style sling is still in good conditon overall. This is a classic American-made rolling block rifle that was popular around the world with military users and shooters due to it's simple and sound design. This Remington Rolling Block would be a great addition to any antique military weapons collection.
