Description:
This is one of the rarest variations of the late war P38 pistols made by the Mauser factory - an all phosphate finish BYF 44, chambered in 9mm. Only a couple of thousand  of these guns have been made and very few have been observed by collectors and all fall in a fairly narrow serial number range - mainly in a D suffix block. It appears that Mauser factory started experimenting with a new finish as a substitute for a less durable salt blue process in 1944 and, as a result, some guns were produced with spotty “dirty” (according to Warren Buxton book on P38s) looking finish, which was not uniform in color. This is one of these very uncommonly seen guns. It is all original, with matching numbers on the slide, barrel, frame and a locking block. The finish is all correct -spotty and splotchy - a thin phosphate wartime finish applied to all main components. All the markings are sharp, including the WaA135 proofs on the right side of the slide. Very good bore and excellent grips. This variation had been nicknamed “grey ghost” by the collectors. A super rare example of an uncommon late war variation.
