Samuel J. Mount, 21st New Jersey Infantry, Cased, .31 Cal, mfg. 1862 with 4" barrel. This Colt was made during a very brief period in which a Hartford barrel address was used as opposed to the two-line New York address which preceded it and the one-line New York address which succeeded it, both in great quantity. Further it is a six-shot variant as opposed to the more common standard five-shot model. The backstrap is neatly inscribed from the period "S.J.MOUNT." who is identified as Sergeant Samuel J. Mount of the 21st New Jersey Infantry. Mount was born in Mercer County on October 19th, 1843 and enlisted with the 21st New Jersey in Trenton on September 15th, 1862. Judging from the coinciding date of manufacture it's safe to say he purchased or was otherwise presented this Colt new when he left for war. The regiment joined the Army of the Potomac on the Antietam battlefield and went on to fight at the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Maryes Heights (Second Battle of Fredericksburg), Salem Heights, and Bank's Ford. Mount and the rest of the regiment were mustered out June 19th, 1863 just prior to the Gettysburg campaign. Samuel Mount remained in Mercer County until his death in 1907. The Colt features matching serial number "202866" marked on the frame, barrel, cylinder, triggerguard, backstrap, and loading lever. The wedge and wedge screw are missing. Overall the metal shows a silver/gray patina with some light marring around the barrel. The brass backstrap and triggerguard retain traces of Silver finish turned black while the balance has a pleasing dark mustard color. The walnut grips fit perfectly and retain 75% original varnish. They are in great shape aside from an old chip at the right front toe. Original hammer, trigger, bead front sight, and screws. The tip of the loading lever has been repaired and fitted with a ball style latch which is now missing. Clear original serial numbers, "COLTS PATENT" frame marking, and "ADDRESS SAMl COLT / HARTFORD CT" barrel address. The action is very strong and crisp and functions wonderfully with the exception of one chamber in particular which does not always rotate at first attempt when landed upon. This is likely due to a worn out hand catch on the rear face of that chamber only. All nipples are clean originals. The bore shows strong and sharp rifling front to back with moderate scattered blackpowder frosting and pinprick pitting. A good proper cleaning will improve it. Included is a nicely made contemporary velvet lined case with instruction label which is done in the correct style of the period. A very honest and original well identified Civil War officer's Colt!
