UNUSUAL MODEL 12 PUMP ACTION IN VERY SCARCE .22 RF SMOOTH BORE CHAMBERING FOR .22 SHOT SHELLS, #381XXX. This one is a bit of a mystery as the left side of the receiver is marked “GALLERY SPECIAL” indicating it was made for the .22 Short cartridge. Whether this was a left over action that Remington decided to use for a smooth bore gun is unknown to me. It is also possible that it was originally manufactured as a typical .22 Short Gallery gun and returned to Remington for a smooth bore barrel. The barrel is correctly marked “.22 CAL. SMOOTH BORE” on the left side ahead of the receiver. The top of the barrel has the usual Remington Arms marking over several patent numbers. The wood is generally fine and looks like it may have had some extra stock finish added without sanding. Action is tight and blue is generally full coverage on the barrel and receiver showing a little ageing on the barrel. The mag tube is mixing/turning more brown. Correct bead front sight and no rear sight dovetail. Bright, exc. bore. Certainly an unusual Model 12.
