Model 1841 Mississippi rifle 58 caliber. Lock marked E.Whitney US, N Haven 1849. Brass Butt plate marked U.S. 28.75" barrel has a dark brown patina marked with inspectors marks GW and VP, rifling is faint but visible and has not been cleaned. Brass Butt plate, trigger guard, patch box and barrel bands have a brown patina and have not been cleaned. Dark walnut stock has an old solid wrist repair and a couple chips along the top near the top and a faint cartouche. Both sling swivels as well as the ram rod are present. I believe this gun was possibly shortened long ago as the patina around the site and muzzle match the rest of the barrel.
