It has a 7.5” barrel, large-size frame, wood grips, an adjustable rear sight, wide-spur hammer, and a safety transfer bar. The finish is a bright blue. The Super Blackhawk uses the same frame size as the Blackhawk, but with a larger grip frame. The square-backed trigger guard is reminiscent of Colt’s Dragoon black powder revolver. According to the serial number list available on the Ruger , this Super Blackhawk was made in 1980. This revolver is in good shape though it has seen some use. There is some minor pitting on the hammer, but this can be removed with the proper application of Flitz polishing compound. The bore is in superb shape and has no pitting or rust. The barrel exhibits minor holster wear. The cylinder is slightly purple which indicates a relatively high vanadium content in the metal. This is not dangerous however, and “purple” Ruger revolvers are relatively common. There is some minor bluing loss in a few spots which are visible in the pictures. Super Blackhawks are well known in the world of big-bore revolvers for their sheer strength and durability. They are capable of handling higher pressure handloads than found in standard factory 44 Magnum. For example, standard Federal 240gr JHP (Mfg. part number AE44A) produces roughly 800 ft-lbs. at the muzzle. Buffalo Bore manufactures a heavy 340gr LRN +P+ load that produces a whopping 1533 ft-lbs.! Caution is advised, as these rounds are only meant to be fired in heavy-frame revolvers like the Ruger Super Blackhawk, Ruger Redhawk, Freedom Arms M83, and Dan Wesson revolvers. DO NOT use them in ANY Smith and Wesson or Colt revolver. The Super Blackhawk has been used to take a variety of game including deer, elk, caribou, moose, and even brown bears. This revolver would make for a nice plinking, hunting, or competition handgun. It would also make a wonderful addition to any Ruger fan’s collection. There is no box.
