Nice 19th Century INDIAN WARS Military Rifle
Here we present an antique U.S. Remington Rolling Block Army Rifle in .50-70 GOVT, made circa 1870-71 in Ilion, New York. The Remington Rolling Block had a sturdy, simple action that was relatively inexpensive, just what many governments wanted in the latter half of the 19th Century.
This one was acquired by the State of New York for their militia. It is marked “SNY” inside a cartouche on the right side of the wrist. An inspector cartouche “HSH” for H.S. Hill also remains quite visible on the left side of the butt stock. What appears to be a unit or rack marking “F/17” is present just below. The butt plate has two distinct notches scored into it and the following markings deeply stamped: “8/F/22”. There are also some interesting markings—mixed letters and numbers—set deeply into the right side of the butt stock.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright and reflective. Small sliver just forward of the receiver on the right side. A great piece of military hardware from the New York State Militia!
