This is also the exact gun that appears in the front photograph of a limited edition monograph, "The Pipes of Sherlock Holmes," written by Richard Carleton Hacker, author of The Ultimate Pipe Book, in the 1980s. Whether or not Sherlock Holmes actually existed is a matter of conjecture, but the bulldog and its providence are certainly real. This Bulldog revolver was made Westley Richards & Co. of London, famous for their double barrel shotguns, and double rifles. This revolver is in Good to Very Good condition. It has almost none of its original finish remaining except for a few tiny remnants. The bore has very deep rifling, with two small spot of erosion near the muzzle and tool marks in one of the lands. The grips are checkered walnut on birds-head grip frames that show moderate wear in the checkering. This will make a very nice addition to a collection of early pocket revolvers. Westley & Richards is one of the premier names in British gun makers, which can be seen from the Very Good mechanical condition of this revolver. We very seldom see 100 year old pocket revolvers with solid cylinder lockups. This five shot revolver is a pocket sized single and double action made by the British firm of Westley Richards & Company. The caliber is not marked, however a .38 Short Colt chambers easily, a .38 Long Colt is too long and a .38 S&W is slightly too large in diameter (both rim and body) to be correct. It is possible, of course, that there was a British cartridge for which this gun was chambered and with which we are unfamiliar. Perhaps Sherlock Holmes had his own proprietary cartridge? priced $998 shipping included with insurance. Layaway available. No credit cards and no trades. C&R ok. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
