Here we present an antique engraved Deane & Son Bolt Action Percussion Rifle made circa the late-1850s. This carbine incorporates Frederick Prince’s British Patent No. 386 of February 21, 1855. Prince’s design was unique for the time and had to swim against the current of the long-established precedence of muzzle-loading arms. The bolt handle can be seen protruding from the bottom of the forearm, just forward of the trigger guard. Working the bolt allowed the shooter to expose the breech from the top side of the rifle to load a paper cartridge. A percussion cap would prime the nipple just like a normal percussion gun. Prince tried to interest the British government for military weaponry and was successful in being able to land an audience with the Board of Ordnance. The system went through a trial that was head to head with the British military’s latest adopted longarm, the Pattern 1853. Despite being very accurate (Prince was said to have placed 16 rounds in about a 1-3/4 inch group at 100 yards) and far quicker to load (72 rounds fired in 15 minutes versus the P1853’s 35 in the same amount of time). Nevertheless, Ordnance did not see fit to adopt Prince’s system and would not adopt a breech-loading firearm until the Snider system. The needlefire Prussian Dreyse and then the French Chassepot, both bolt action designs would further lay the groundwork for what would soon become standard in virtually every military worldwide. This specimen is a medium barreled, sporting rifle in .40 caliber. This was almost certainly intended to be used for hunting medium-sized game such as deer and the like. The wood has handsome grain and the checkering on the wrist and forearm is hand-cut. Nice engraving throughout. The overall condition is nearing fine. The action is strong. The bore is bright with nice rifling. The engravings are elegant and quite attractive. “DEANE & SON” is clearly read on the lock. The finish on the wood still shines and the checkering remains sharp with nice grip. “CJ” is engraved on the medallion on the bottom buttstock. A beautiful rifle and a steppingstone on the way to what we today would consider the modern bolt action rifle! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 28 inches. Caliber: .40 Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
