Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Rare & Massive 8 Gauge Percussion Double Barrel Market Hunter's Shotgun, 8 Ga, mfg. ca. 1850. Large bore shotguns and punt guns were the weapons of choice for commercial hunters who made their living harvesting as much waterfowl as possible on a daily basis to supply local markets and hotels. This substantial "market gun" weighs 14 lbs 7 oz and features 40 7/16" long Belgium proofed Damascus barrels fitted with an iron bead front sight and banded breech. The inside diameter of the bores measure approximately .825". The locks are lightly engraved and the metal has a dark plum patina drifting to gray overall with much Damascus pattern still visible on the barrels. The stock features a low carved cheekpiece with unusual punch-dot checkered wrist. There is a considerable amount of small worm holes scattered throughout which appear to have been filled perhaps naturally from dirt and grime due to continued years of use. The wood has been lightly cleaned at some point yet still retains a worn aged appearance. Aside from a very fine crack just beginning to form below the wrist the stock remains very sound with no additional damage or repairs. Iron buttplate with massive brass triggerguard, engraved forend tip, large Nickel Silver wedge escutcheons, and iron ramrod pipes with original brass tipped wood ramrod. Both hammers are matching originals and both actions are remarkably crisp and function wonderfully. Both nipples are very clean originals. The thick heavy barrels appear quite sound with no dents and perfect original ribs. Bigger is better when it comes to authentic market guns and it is very hard to find doubles of this impressive size. A rare chance to own a truly massive original 8 Gauge shotgun!
