Description: PROVENANCE: Josiah Carroll was a 38-year-old farmer from Hudson, Columbia County, New York, when he enlisted as a Private on November 8, 1862 and sworn in for a 3-year term of service by Captain Olmstead, thus becoming a member of Company C, 12th New York Volunteer Cavalry, a unit which served in North Carolina. The Regimental records show this Burnside Cavalry Carbine, serial number 18861, issued to him and in his possession on Sept. 15, 1863. To that point, the unit was involved in mostly minor skirmishes around Tarboro, New Bern and Washington, N.C. 2 weeks later, on Sept. 28, 1863, Mr. Carroll died at Camp Palmer, NC, due to typhoid fever, a very common ailment at the time, becoming one of the many non-combat casualties of the Civil War. Mr. Carroll was interred at the cemetery in New Bern, NC, the next day, Section 5, site 895. Mr. Carroll's widow, Mary Jane Carroll, applied for a widow's pension on October 26, 1863. This rifle does show up on the Springfield Research Survey as being issued to this regiment, and an independent researcher was hired to uncover the rest of the historical information. Full provenance, which includes his enlistment and muster rolls, medical and pension records (all retreived from the National Archives Museum in Washington, D.C.), and gravesite info/photos will be included for the purchaser of this rifle. PICTURES OF THE PROVENANCE PAPERWORK CAN BE EMAILED UPON REQUEST.
