Description:
WW2 EARLY & RARE KABAR BLUED BLADE USMC MK.2 FIGHTING KNIFE WITH CORRECT ORIGINAL LEATHER SCABBARD. Please see Cole's Book 3, page 94, #3. This is a rare early Blued Blade Mk.2 KA-BAR Fighting & Utility knife. The early Blued Mk.2 KABARS are classified by well know expert in WW2 Military Knives, Frank Trzaska in many of his articles on the subject. They are broken into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Generation depending on spacer color at the hilt, pommel type, pommel attachment. The earliest were red/black/red spacers with a thin pommel that was peened on. 2nd Generation has 3 black spacers and also a peened thin pommel. Since many Marines used the butt for a "hammer", the pommels would sometimes break off. KABAR changed to a thick pommel that was threaded on to the tang to solve this problem resulting in the 3rd Generation variety. All three variations are very rare in any condition, with the 3rd Generation being the least often encountered. These knives saw heavy use in the early WW2 Island Hopping  Campaigns of the South Pacific. High condition examples are rarely seen today. This example survives in Excellent+ condition with approximately 80%+ original high polish deep KABAR blued finish. The finish loss is along the main edge where it has been carefully sharpened. The crossguard, handle, and pommel are all tight with no movement. There is some scattered corrosion on the crossguard, and top of the pommel. The correct original leather scabbard remains in excellent+ condition, and the snap closure is without problems. The leather is still flexible. The leather ring handle at the point it meets the crossguard has some slight flaking. Overall a fine excellent+ example of a rare and desirable WW2 USMC Fighting Knife. Mint condition examples command $1200-$1500+ when found available for sale. Shipping is $17.
