Description:
Just a really nice example of a late production Civilian Colt Model 1889 Double Action Revolver.  One of the best we've seen in quite some time.  Caliber is 38 Colt with 4 1/2" barrel and Checkered Hard Rubber Navy Grips.  This was Colt's first Modern Era Double Action Revolver with a swing-out cylinder.  They only produced 31,000 of these from 1889-1894 with the first 5,000 going to the US Navy.  The 1889 had a beautiful full fluted cylinder as it lacked cylinder stops relying solely on the ratchet for indexing...something Colt improved upon with the introduction of the Model 1892.   This example is in the 25,000 range and was made in the year 1893.  Being a late example, it shares the same frame as the Model 1892 as it has cuts in the bottom of the frame for the cylinder stop.

Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent Plus with 97% bright original blue on the frame and barrel.  The straps are about 80% overall with some brown freckles, mostly on the backstrap. The cylinder has flaked to about 50% original blue....not much wear, just flaked off which is common from the heat bluing process Colt used back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  The grips are excellent and numbered to the gun with perfect fit.  Assembly numbers are all matching.  Early style barrel with 1884 and 1888 patent dates.  Fire blue on the screws, trigger, and back of hammer.   Perfect bore and mechanics as it shows very little use. These early antique swingout DA's are  tough to find in this condition, especially blued ones!
