Description:
FRONTIER Antique AMERICAN LONG Rifle in .45 Caliber Golcher Lock Pioneer

Manufactured Circa 1840s -1850s!

Here we present an antique Half-Stock Rifle, made circa the 1840s-50s. This long arm features a long octagonal barrel with a smooth bore and rifle sights. Such a weapon would have been used for harvesting game for the table and providing protection for the homestead.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the ‘Kentucky rifle’, was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This rifle is the epitome of the practical rifle. It is slick, having nothing unnecessary protruding and has a very simple but attractive patch box mounted in the butt stock. The octagonal barrel is 37 inches in length and bored for .45 caliber. It is not too heavy. This would have been—and appears to still be—a great rifle for the woods and plains and a great many deer were probably taken with this very rifle.

The overall condition is Good. The action is strong and tight. Even the patch box springs open when the hidden button on the toe is pressed. The bore is dark with nice rifling and it is evident that the last owner shot this rifle and took great care of it. “GOULCHER” is legible on the lock. With the finish on the walnut stock still shines making this piece for display.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 37 inches.

Caliber: .45 Percussion
