Short Barreled “Long Rifle” made in TROY, NEW YORK!
Here we present an antique Nelson Lewis Back Action Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century in Troy, New York. Lewis was a rifle maker who was well known for his muzzle-loading hunting rifles and combination guns. Nelson Lewis was born in 1811 near Speigletown, New York, a few miles north of Troy. As a young man he followed market hunting, which at the time was a legitimate business and highly profitable if a man was a good hunter and a good shot. It is said that Lewis possessed both of these qualifications. Its stout octagonal barrel is in .45 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead.
The overall condition is good. The action is strong. Good bore. Atop the barrel “N. LEWIS” and “TROY” are legible. This example features a rear peep sight and tubular iron front sight.
