Description:
Model 1903 Style "NB" National Match Rifle.  Quantity made 195, between 1925 and 1926, with the "B" type stock, which have service type, deep checkered buttplate, also a pistol grip configurtion, having a noticeably square profile.  The "B" Stock had more drop than standard and was suitable for off-hand shooting only.  Armory assembled rifles will bear the "P" in a circular proof mark, on the underside of the pistol grip.

My father purchased this rifle, at a gunshow, in the late 80's.  This particular rifle was modified by the original owner, with well done checkering, on the pistol grip and forearm, and buttcap, which was occasionally found on National Match 03 rifles.  The original barrel was replaced, with a SA National Match barrel, dated "8-32", including the NM star mark, on the muzzle.  With the exception of the barrel and stock modifications, the rifle comes with the original parts and proof markings, of the manufactured time period.  Also, accompanying the rifle is a Springfield Research Service letter, verifying the sale on Sept. 27, 1926, in Delphos, Kansas.  Attached, to the rear sling loop, is a metal ID tag stamped, Delphos, Kansas.

The SRS letter stated, it was "possbile" the rifle was originally issued as an "NB" model, but were unbale to "substantiate" this.  Through my research on forums and various collectors, the rifle exibits the characteristics of the "NB" model, the "B" type stock, a checkered buttplate, the "P" proof mark, the electo-penciled serial#, and the J5 steel lot code, associated with the serial number and date of manufacturing.  I believe the rifle was originally issued as an "NB" model, before the modifications, and would rate the rifles condition as "very good".
