Unique Breech Loader w Rotating Drum Action!
Here we present an antique M1867 Werndl-Holub Breech Loading Infantry Rifle, made by Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft, Steyr, Austria, dated 1871. This single-shot breechloading rifle was adopted by the Austro-Hungarian army in 1867 after a close trial with the ubiquitous Remington Rolling Block Rifle. When it came time to choose, Emperor Franz Joseph selected the Austrian Werndl-Holub. It replaced the Wanzl breechloader conversion of the muzzle-loading Lorenz rifle. Josef Werndl and Karel Holub designed and patented this rifle with Werndl eventually buying out Holub. The feature that makes this rifle especially unique is the rotating breech block.
This one is marked on the butt plate with unit markings: “27.LSt.B/1032”.
The overall condition is Near Fine. The action is strong and tight. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. A great example of a piece of history showcasing incremental changes in firearms technology throughout the world!
