Description:
This is a true Saint Louis made Buffalo rifle chambered in the 56-46 Spencer rimfire round. It has a 30 inch Octagon barrel, marked F-Schilling. it weighs 14 pounds has double set triggers and a mint bore. The overall condition is excellent. The wood shows use but no abuse. The receiver finish has turned to silver and retains 80% of the finish. It is fitted with a pewter nose cap and a cleaning rod. Schilling was a partner with Bleickendorfer as gunsmiths at 12 Main St saint Louis from 1864 to 1874. The statistics on the 56-40 cartridge are stated as a 330 grain bullet with 45 grains blackpowder producing 1210 feet per second with a muzzle energy of 1080 foot pounds. This information is taken from the Plains rifle by Charles Hanson junior. Geronimo is said to have carried a heavy barrel Spencer 44 caliber serial number 807.
