Description:
Manufactured between 1886 and 1913, the antique Smith & Wesson .44 Double Action Frontier Model revolver was a .44-40 Winchester version of the Smith & Wesson Double Action First Model revolver chambered in .44 S&W Russian.  The .44 Double Action Frontier featured a blued or nickel factory finish, a double-action top-break design, a 6-shot fluted cylinder 1 & 9/16ths" inches long, smooth Walnut or black hard rubber grips, and a 4",5",6", or 6.5" inch barrel.  This model got it's own serial number range starting at "1" and ending at "15340", which duplicated some of the serial number range of the short-cylindered .44 S&W Russian Double Action First Model.  The S&W .44 Double Action Frontier proved to be an excellent weapon, very well-made and reliable while being chambered in the powerful .44-40 Winchester cartridge that many lever action rifles were chambered in.  This simplified things for many by allowing the owner to carry one type and caliber of ammunition for both his sidearm and rifle.  While it was an excellent weapon, it was not a huge commercial success at the time but did have a strong following among gunfighters and shootists.  One well known example of "Old West" use of the .44 Double Action Frontier revolver was by Texas gunfighter and outlaw John Wesley Hardin, who was using one of these revolvers when he was killed in a shootout in the Acme Saloon by Constable John Selman in El Paso, Texas in 1895.  Today these S&W revolvers are sought-after by gun collectors, western historians, and shooters alike.  This particular example is serial number 6370, and it was manufactured sometime circa 1890 to 1893.  It is a factory nickel finish gun with a 6" inch barrel and factory hard rubber grips.  It is 100% all-original and all-matching.  The frame, cylinder, barrel assembly, top-latch/rear sight, and both grips are all factory numbered and matching.  It is obvious that this Smith has been cared for over the years and fired very, very little.  The factory nickel finish shows it's age with some corrosion, flaking, and light staining, but is still mostly intact and attractive overall.  The original factory case coloring on the trigger and hammer still shows a lot of bright colors, particularly in the protected areas.  The face of the trigger doesn't show any of the case colors left, but the sides and rear edges are still nice and bright.  The hammer has nice bright color all around, with only minor wear showing where the hammer's sides make contact with the gun's frame when the action is worked.  The original factory gloss blue finish on the triggerguard is still nice and bright with only light wear and handling marks on the outside face of the guard, consistent with the rest of the gun.  The bore in this .44 Double Action Frontier is really amazing and looks like-new.  The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves throughout the barrel, and there is no pitting, erosion, or imperfections visible whatsoever.  The six cylinder bores are equally as clean and pristine.  As you can see from the pictures, this Smith shows little to no evidence of being fired at any point since leaving the factory nearly 130 years ago.  There is no powder staining or pitting on the forcing cone, cylinder face, or top strap, amazing when you consider this gun was made at a time when black powder was commonly used going forward for decades.  The original factory grips on this S&W are in excellent condition.  Both black hard rubber grip panels are free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or visible wear.  The checkering is still crisp and sharp, and the S&W logos are in perfect shape.  The double-action operation on this .44 Double Action Frontier Model is in perfect working order.  The double-action operation is perfectly "in time" and smooth, and the cylinder locks up extremely tight with no wiggle at full-lock.  We have no doubt that you could safely load this revolver up and fire off many hundreds of rounds in double-action operation without a hitch.  The only mechanical issue with this Smith is that when you try to operate the gun single-action the hammer cocks back just fine, but when you pull the trigger it wants to kick forward before the hammer drops all of the way.  You really have to pull the trigger deliberately hard for it to operate properly in single-action operation.  All of the controls on this .44 Double Action Frontier Model are 100% functional, and we have no doubt that a competent gunsmith could fix the trigger issue in single-action operation very easily.  If you have been looking for one of these neat antique Smith & Wessons for your collection here is your chance to get a superb all-original and all-matching example at a great price.  As this revolver is an antique, it can be shipped directly to your door without having to go thru an FFL.  As a side note, it would be quite interesting to send in for a factory letter for this Smith to see if it has any American West history, or just when and where it was originally shipped.
