Here we present an Ornate Half Stock Percussion American Long Rifle, made circa the mid-19th Century. This rifle features cast German Silver hardware with elaborate engraved game and hunting scenes complete with hounds chasing a stag on both the large patchbox on the right side of the butt stock as well as the border to the butt plate on the left. The patchbox finial also depicts a stag. The left side of the butt stock features a cheekpiece with a wolf-shaped placard. The barrel tang and the lock are engraved. There is a name on the lock that is a bit obscure. Cherry stock. Rifle sights. This musket’s stout octagonal barrel is in .56 caliber and smoothbore, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression.
The overall condition is very good. The action functions properly. The bore is smooth and in good condition. A few small repairs to the stock throughout, otherwise solid. This is a very handsome old plains gun that would have been—and remains—as handsome a piece to admire as it was to shoot!
