Description:
Manufactured for one year only in 1937, the Mossberg Model No.35A was Mossberg's top-of-the-line single-shot bolt-action .22 target rifle.  The No.35A was a revised version of Mossberg's Model No.35, which was the firm's first full target model .22 caliber rifle. The No.35A featured the new "master action" with a better lock time and an improved trigger, a gloss blue finish, a 26" inch heavy target barrel, a hooded front target sight, a fully adjustable rear No.4 peep sight with an adjustable aperature, and a target-style American Walnut stock. The total weight of the rifle was approx. 8.25 pounds and the length of pull is 13 & 5/8ths inches.  This particular example is a beautifully restored rifle.  The blue finish is bright and clean, rating 95% with the onlu deductions from some finish loss on top of the receiver from a previously mounted optics rail.  As you can see from the pictures, rather than use the factory side-mounted drilled and tapped holes a previous owner drilled and tapped the top of the receiver. These holes currently have plug screws in them.  All of the factory stampings are still crisp and clear on the barrel about 4" inches in front of the receiver where it is stamped "O.F. Mossberg & Sons Inc. New Haven Conn. U.S.A. No.35A .22 Cal L.R. Pat Pend."  The polished bright bolt is clean and in excellent condition.  The bore in the 26" inch heavy barrel is in excellent condition as well, mirror-bright and clean with sharp rifling throughout.  There is no visible pitting or erosion. The front and rear sights are intact and in great shape.  The front globe-style target sight has a removable insert and is in perfect condition.  The rear No.4 peep sight is also in superb condition with all of the adjustments in perfect working order, including the adjustable aperature which has 4 size settings.  The original American Walnut stock is very attractive on this Mossberg.  Whomever did the refinishing did an excellent job with the color and there are no cracks, chips, repairs, or major dings/dents visible.  As you can see in the pictures, there are some very small extra holes in the stock on the bottom edge of the forearm, likely from an aftermarket hand-stop rail being mounted on it previously.  The original steel buttplate is still in place, and the stock has a set of sling swivels mounted on it.  The action on this rifle is smooth and precise, and turns into battery nicely without any grit or slop.  The trigger is excellent and breaks cleanly with a very light pull, having been modified to reduce both travel and weight. The rear-mounted safety lever is in perfect working order.  We have no doubt that this vintage Mossberg No.35A will shoot just as accurately and reliably today as the day it first left the factory over 83 years ago.  If you have been looking for a classy vintage .22 target rifle to add your collection, this scarce, beautifully-restored low-production Mossberg would be an excellent choice.
