Antique SHARPS New Model 1863 50-70 GOVT CARBINE
Classic Old West Saddle Ring Carbine
Here we present an antique Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine, made circa 1863 for the Civil War, then converted to 50-70 Govt circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War, and afterward, the U.S. contracted with Sharps to convert them at the factory to shoot metallic cartridges. Just over 31,000 firearms were converted in this manner, in several different variants. They went on to experience some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the railroad.
This specimen is an example of one of the conversions which was converted to .50-70 GOVT. The original inspector cartouches are very faint around the sling ring bar, however, the cartouche from the conversion of this carbine in the middle of the left side of the butt stock is clear: “DFC” for inspector David F. Clark. The top of the barrel is marked “SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO/HARTFORD, CONN.” The rear of the barrel is marked “MODEL 1863”. The left side of the frame is marked “C.SHARPS PAT./SEPT. 12, 1846”. The right side of the frame is marked “C. SHARPS PAT. OCT. 5TH 1852/R.S.LAWRENCE PAT./APRIL 12TH, 1859”.
The overall condition is very good. The barrel retains about 60% coverage of thinning blue finish. The frame’s case colors are just discernible. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The stock is smooth and in good shape aside from where it has been damaged and repaired around the receiver tangs. The bore is in very good shape, semi-bright with strong rifling. The action on this carbine is excellent. Here is a nice example of a Civil War Sharps Carbine that was given new life for military service when it was converted to the large .50-70 GOVT!
