Description:
SCARCE CIVIL WAR SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET DATED 1862. Early Civil War production and 100% original battle used example. 58 caliber 40” barrel with original front and rear sights and Springfield Armory U.S. Ordnance “V/P/EAGLEHEAD” proofs at the breech. Original ramrod and sling swivels. Lock plate stamped “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD” and date stamped “1862”. Butt plate tang stamped “US”. Very good example with old dark original attic patina on metal and stock. Worn and faint partial outline of the Ordnance Inspector’s cartouche on the side panel. Untouched since the war. Lock in working order. Dark bore with only traces of rifling. Fewer and fewer of these early Model 1861’s are seen for sale every year and are a “Must Have” for the Civil War collector.
